The History of Kennywood

David P. Hahner, author of Images of America: Kennywood, discusses Kennywood Amusement Park’s 120-year history. Founded in 1898 at the terminus of the Monongahela Street Railway trolley line, the park quickly grew into a favorite summertime destination. In 1987, Kennywood was designated a National Historic Landmark. Hahner is an avid amusement park and roller coaster enthusiast and has been a lifelong fan of Kennywood.

Mary Hogan

In this beautifully crafted novel from the author of the critically acclaimed Two Sisters and The Woman in the Photo, comes the story of a woman who retreats into a fantasy world on New York City’s Upper West Side as she slowly loses her once whip-smart husband to dementia.

The Power Community Book Discussion

Mt. Lebanon Public Library invites the community to come together for a thoughtful book discussion of The Power by Naomi Alderman.  In the book, the world is a recognizable place until a vital new force takes root and flourishes: Teenage girls suddenly have immense physical power and can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets. Naomi Alderman is a Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year and Granta Best of British writer, Copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk.  Light refreshments will be served.

Citizen Science: Monarchs & Milkweed

Gabi Hughes from The Audubon Society will explain how you can make your yard more monarch-friendly. Learn about this fascinating butterfly, its life cycle, and the milkweeds it depends upon. For kids entering third grade through adult. Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania’s Citizen Science Project invites everyone to observe, identify, photograph and chronicle data for real-world science. No experience necessary, great for families!

Beer Garden Bash
6 pm, Saturday, August 25

Sample more than a dozen fine regional ales, lagers, and ciders in Mt. Lebanon Public Library’s lush garden Courtyard. Savor gourmet Silver Star all beef hot dogs, bratwurst, and Field Roast veggie dogs smothered in specialty toppings while enjoying the music of steel drum artist Dan Meunier. This event always sells out, so get your tickets early. The $35 general admission and $50 VIP tickets go on sale July 9 at the library or www.mtlebanonlibrary.org/beergarden. No tickets will be sold at the door. Adults 21+ only.

COURTYARD CONCERTS

Mt. Lebanon Public Library will host concerts in its courtyard, on Thursdays in August, beginning at 7. Concerts will move inside in the event of rain.

August 2: Christopher Mark Jones: Folk-blues.

August 9: Olga Watkins Trio: Blues, funk, soul, jazz, reggae, and rock.

August 16: RML Jazz: Smooth/classic/modern jazz, Bebop, Dixieland, R&B, and updated Standards.

August 23: Martin Spitznagel: Ragtime

August 30: Mt. Lebanon High School String Quartet: Light classics, Broadway hits, and
classic popular songs
