Please show your support for our ESB and our High School Liaisons by voting for the Mt. Lebanon Environmental Sustainability Board – Energy Camel Project as part of a Facebook competition for a $1,000 grant from PA American Water. The three projects with the most votes will receive the $1,000 grant.  The voting continues until December 8 and you are able to vote for the project every 24 hours.

The Energy Camel Project will engage Mt. Lebanon high school students in an ESB outreach program that encourages water and energy conservation by using “fun” to help change human behavior patterns.

When residents implement a water or energy saving strategy in their home or business, they will receive a “herd” of energy camels on their front lawns, similar to the flamingo “flocking” that we regularly see in our community. This herd will begin a conversation in neighborhoods where one resident might ask of the other, “What did you have to do to wake up and find a herd of camels in your front yard?” The neighbors will then begin a dialogue where they will discuss the ways that they are saving water and energy. This type of fun project will create a healthy competition where neighbors will watch to see who will receive the camels next. plastic flamingos

This project was inspired by Volkswagen’s www.thefuntheory.com and by community flamingo “flocking.” High school students will design the Energy Camels and will construct them from weather-resistant, recycled materials purchased from Construction Junction. ESB members will help the students locate residents who have begun to save water and energy in their homes and businesses, and will help the students install the Energy Camels in the residents’ front yards.

This project will help residents conserve water, a precious resource, and energy, since water treatment and delivery are energy intensive (electricity intensive) processes. This project has great potential to reduce green house gas emissions and other forms of air pollution due to the fact that, in our region, electricity is primarily produced through the burning of coal and other fossil fuels. Reducing green house gas emissions and other forms of air pollution will improve our regional air quality. Since the reduction of green house gas emissions and other forms of air pollution will improve our regional air quality, our residents will enjoy increased health & productivity.
