Finish Lines: Mike Crupi
Mike Crupi, Orchard Drive, started Lebo Subs on Washington Road in 2014. When the pandemic struck in the spring, Crupi was one of several Mt. Lebanon restaurant owners who provided food at a discount or for free for first responders and essential workers.
How did you get into the business?
I had worked several years in corporate America and was bored and looking to do something for myself. I had never worked in a restaurant but didn’t think it would be very hard to own and run a sandwich shop.
Why did you choose Mt. Lebanon for your location?
My wife Alicia grew up in the area and always wanted to move back here. We loved the idea of a walking community and the great schools were very important to us.
What makes a good sub?
Fresh stuff! Almost all our products come from small locally owned companies. Thumann’s is nothing less than the best deli meat available, anywhere. We bake our own bread with dough made locally by Sanchioli Brothers. We cook our own prime cut roast beef procured from Strip District Meats. We also make our own soups, pasta and potato salads, tuna and chicken salads fresh from our own family recipes. We make custom subs right in front of you with meats sliced to order and created with toppings we cut and slice daily.
Tell us a bit about how you adapted through COVID-19 restrictions.
We have been “take-out only” since March. It keeps us, our employees and families, and our customers safe. We probably won’t open to any dine-in until all restrictions are lifted. Luckily our sales have continued to grow as more people realized we are a deli and a sub shop. We sell all of our meats, cheeses and salads by the pound which is very helpful for customers who cannot shop or do not want to visit the grocery store during the pandemic or may just want an option for convenience.
