A Mt. Lebanon toddler is helping raise awareness of, and celebrating, individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Forest Hartman, 2, Terraceview Drive, was among the children 10 and under sporting The Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh’s new World Down Syndrome Day T-shirts at a fashion show at Ross Park Mall recently.

It was DSAP’s first fashion show, featuring adult and teen models with Down syndrome wearing American Eagle and Aerie spring looks.

“The WDSD fashion show was a wonderful event,” said Jenna Hartman, Forest’s mom. “The Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh did a great job of organizing the show. All of the models had so much fun and confidence on the runway. It was amazing to be in such a public space and showcase the beauty that is Down syndrome. Our family is beyond lucky to have Forest and to be part of such a special community.“

DSAP received a $10,000 grant from The Aerie Real Foundation, whose mission is to build confidence in women, foster an inclusive community and protect the planet.

World Down Syndrome Day, or WDSD, is an annual global awareness day on March 21, signifying the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome in Down syndrome.
