Mt. Lebanon’s Earth Day celebration will be from 11 to 3, Sunday, April 28, in Mt. Lebanon Park. Parking will be available in the recreation center lot, in the commissioners’ lot and in the high school south lot.

The event will feature two activity tents, one for music provided by Suzuki music students and Mt. Lebanon High School Orchestra ensembles, and one with meditation sessions, yoga, a composting workshop and possibly a photography workshop.

Visitors will be able to learn about renewable energy, energy conservation, the benefits of eating food raised by local farmers, protecting domestic and wild animals and their habitats, the ins and outs of raising backyard chickens and creating artwork from reclaimed or recycled products.

The Mt. Lebanon Public Library’s Book Cellar will be collecting used books for resale and recycling. Bring a white T-shirt for tie-dyeing with iron oxide reclaimed from passive mine reclamation systems.

Food vendors include Betsy’s Ice Cream, BRGR, Conover Organic Farms, PitaLand, Pittsburgh Honey and Mediterra Bakehouse.

Last year’s Earth Day celebration received a PRC Gold Zero Waste Award for diverting 90 percent of the event’s waste from the landfill between composting and recycling. The event planners are aiming for another Zero Waste designation this year by purchasing compostable plates and utensils for food vendors, renting composting and recycling stations from the Pennsylvania Resources Council and by composting with the Pittsburgh Garden Company and Composting Services.
