earth day 2012
Come down to Mt. Lebanon Park for our community Earth Day celebration, Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Along with the food, music and fun, the Washington School Green Team will be collecting old MP3 players, digital cameras, laptops and cell phones for recycling. They also will collect old/used-up tape rolls, pens, markers, glue sticks, mascaras, makeup compacts and lipsticks. There will also be a collection point for old sneakers, part of the Nike Recycling Program.
Representatives from the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center will bring shelter animals and will give a talk on making a wildlife garden. At 2 p.m., avian experts from the National Aviary will lead a birding walk.
Find information and displays on a number of green initiatives, including a Nissan Leaf electric car, solar panels and electric bikes, and a demonstration of energy efficient lighting. Find out how you can make Construction Junction, the nonprofit building materials reuse retailer, a part of your next home renovation project. Buy environmentally friendly gifts from I Made It! Market, or make your own with the Mt. Lebanon High School Environmental Club and local girl scout troops.
Pennsylvania American Water will be on hand to show what happens to the water we drink as it makes its way from the river to the tap. Stormwater Central, with representatives from the Mt. Lebanon Environmental Sustainability Board, Stormworks, Nine Mile Run Watershed Association and the Audubon Society, will present information about rain gardens and will be selling rain barrels.
