EDITORS’ PICK: TAKING BETTER PHOTOS
Thursdays, October 17 & 24 and November 14 & 21
Beginner and intermediate level photographers can learn from a National Geographic expedition photographer at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library. Sponsored by the Photo Section Photography Club, Aaron Raymond will lead the class through all the facets of photography—from exposure and settings to composition and equipment. The cost is $10, and you must register in person at the circulation desk. Classes are 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Room A.

 

AUTHOR DINNER
Wednesday, October 16
Meet Marie Benedict, author of Carnegie’s Maid; The Only Woman in the Room and The Other Einstein, at the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon’s annual fundraising dinner at 6 p.m. at St. Clair Country Club. Open bar, raffle and silent auction featuring items to enhance genealogy studies, and a week in a vacation home in Charleston, South Carolina. Tickets start at $80. MUMMIES OF THE WORLD
Starting October 5
The largest exhibition of mummies ever assembled is making a stop in Pittsburgh at the Carnegie Science Center. Explore 125 real mummies and related artifacts from Europe, South America, ancient Egypt and more. Tickets to the exhibit are separate from museum admission.

 

ZOO BOO
October 19, 20, 26 & 27
Pittsburgh Zoo will have a trick-or-treat trail, haunted house, character meet-and-greets, a dance party, elephant photos and costume contests at its popular Zoo Boo events. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, and costumes are welcome.

 

MOVIE NIGHT
Friday, October 18
The Denis Theatre Foundation presents A Movie Night in Mt. Lebanon, with a free screening of the acclaimed indie film Hearts Beat Loud, starring Nick Offerman, at 7:30 p.m., in the Washington School auditorium. A post-movie discussion will follow.

 

ART FOR A CAUSE
Wednesday, November 6
Enjoy a holiday cookie table, entertainment, shopping and the gallery at Artsmiths of Pittsburgh at this festive event, 5 to 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit Mt. Lebanon Village, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping seniors stay connected to the community. Tickets are $30. RSVP to kpowers@mtlebanonvillage.org or call 412-343-4054.

 

PUMPKIN PATCH
October 12 – 31
Each year, Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills hosts a pumpkin patch to raise money for the Navajo Indian Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico. In addition to the pumpkins, past events have included food trucks, activities and an open house. Daily hours and activities can be found on Sunnyhill’s Facebook page.

EXTRA, EXTRA!

MIXED RED
Through December 12
The color red is the star of the show at Scott Hunter’s Mixed Red exhibition, presented by the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. This selection of new mixed media will be on display at Point Park University’s Tomayko Gallery.

HAY DAY
Saturday, October 5
Go to the South Park fairgrounds for free hay rides, a hay maze, arts and crafts, petting zoo, inflatables and more. The event, from noon to 4 p.m., will also include local food trucks and vendors.

GISELLE
October 15 to 17
One of the most iconic ballets of all time, Giselle tells the story of a village girl doomed by a lover’s deceit through a breathtaking Romantic period score by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Tickets start at $28.

WARHOL COMMUNITY DAY
Sunday, October 20
Celebrate The Warhol’s 25th anniversary by exploring the museum for free. Other activities throughout the day include hands-on art-making, gallery talks and activities, live performances and a participatory art installation. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

40th REUNION
Saturday, October 26
Mt. Lebanon Class of 1979 will meet at the Valley Brook Country Club in Peters Township at 6:30 p.m. Pre-event activities include a gathering at The Saloon after the Mt. Lebanon-Central Catholic game on Friday, October 25, and a tour of the high school the day of the reunion.

FAMILY BINGO
Sunday, October 27
Airpods, a 42” smart TV and other great raffle prizes are up for grabs at Outreach Teen & Family Services’ Unmasking the Stigma family bingo event from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Kids are welcome to come in costume (no masks, please). No tickets will be sold at the door so get them asap!

The Mt. Lebanon Junior Women’s Club’s 11th annual Holiday Market is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, at the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church. If you are an artist or crafter who may be interested in participating, click here.
