Editors’ Pick: BANFF FILM FESTIVAL
Friday, April 5, to Sunday, April 7
Bringing you incredible stories from accomplished paddlers, skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers, mountain bikers, explorers and other adventurers, the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour is one of Venture Outdoors’ most popular annual events. Tickets for this three-day festival at the Byham Theater usually sell out.

 

SUMMER LEAGUE SIGNUPS

  • The South Hills Senior Softball League, for men ages 55 and up, is now accepting players for 2019. The league
    runs April through August.
  • The Mt. Lebanon Senior Men’s Golf Club, for men ages 55 and up, is accepting new members. The club meets Wednesday mornings at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course from April through October.
  • The Women’s Golf Association of Mt. Lebanon, open to residents and non-residents, is accepting new members. The club meets Tuesday mornings at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course from April through October.
  • The Fairway Swingers, a women’s golf club, is accepting new members. The club meets Thursday mornings from April through October. 412-563-7334.
 

CUPS FOR A CAUSE
Saturday, April 6
In memory of Carol Bodamer, a Mt. Lebanon mother who died in 2013, the Bodamer family is hosting its sixth annual Cups for a Cause event to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This event, at 4 p.m. at the Bethel Park Community Center, includes dinner, a beer pong tournament, face painting, a balloon artist and more.

 

ANNUAL EGG HUNT
Saturday, April 13
Rain Date: April 14
Will there be enough eggs for everyone? Only one way to find out. Run real fast!! The Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department’s annual Egg Hunt will start at 1 p.m. in Mt. Lebanon Park. Go get those eggs, then (hopefully) enjoy a glorious spring day in the park.

 

CREATING A JAPANESE GARDEN
Thursday, April 25
How can you create a peaceful Japanese Garden at your home? Dr. Brenda G. Jordan from the University of Pittsburgh’s Asian Studies Center will tell you at 6 p.m. at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. This event is free and open to the public.

 

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
April 25 to May 11
Little Lake Theatre Company kicks off its 2019 season with The Drowsy Chaperone, a parody of American musical theater of the 1920s. The vibrant cast of characters includes two lovers on the eve of their wedding, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, an intoxicated chaperone and more. Tickets start at $14.

 

NIGHT AT THE SPEAKEASY
Wednesday, May 8
KDKA’s Ken Rice will emcee Outreach Teen & Family Services’ annual fundraiser gala, “Night at the Speakeasy,” 6 p.m. at Sienna Mercato’s Il Tetto. Tickets are $125. Get yours before they sell out.

EXTRA, EXTRA!

MY TRAVELING SONG
April 5 to 14
Billed as “an original play for very young children and the grown-ups who love them,” My Traveling Song is a new play created by a team of female artists, some of whom reside here in Mt. Lebanon. Produced by a local theater company, the Haiwatha Project, this play will be performed at Carnegie Stage.

TARTAN DAY
Saturday, April 6
Bagpipers, fiddlers, dancers, food, raffles, Celtic workshops and shopping are all part of what makes Tartan Day such a lasting tradition in the South Hills. This free celebration will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

KEYNOTES FASHION SHOW
Saturday, April 13
Break out your spring wardrobe at the Keynotes Annual Fashion Show and luncheon, themed “Lace and Flowers,” at 11 a.m. at St. Clair Country Club. Chico’s will debut its spring line, while guests enjoy lunch, raffles, vendors and more. Proceeds benefit the Keynotes Scholarship Program.

DNA WORKSHOP

Curious about genealogical DNA testing? The Mt. Lebanon Genealogical Society will present a “An Overview of DNA Testing and What to Do Once You Receive Your Results” at 1 p.m. in Mt. Lebanon Public Library. It will cover testing companies, an explanation of the types of tests and which are most useful for genealogy. ART CRASH COURSE

Do you ever feel like you could appreciate art, if you just knew more about it? The Carnegie Museum of Art is offering a three-session crash-course on Neoclassicism, Romanticism and Realism utilizing the museum’s collection. Class time slots are 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m.

STAR SPANGLED SPRING
Friday & Saturday, April 26 & 27
Get in the warm-weather spirit with a program of American folk tunes, Broadway hits and more at the South Hills Chorale’s annual spring concert. The group consists of 90 singers from various communities in the South Hills and beyond. They will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair.

GARDEN SYMPOSIUM
Saturday, April 27
With a large daffodil show, garden marketplace and a schedule filled with nationally-acclaimed gardening experts and authors, Penn State Extension’s 24th Annual Garden & Landscape Symposium is one of the most significant horticultural events in our area. This year’s symposium begins at 8 a.m. at the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts at Shady Side Academy Senior School in Fox Chapel. Preregister here.

BARK FOR LIFE
Saturday, May 4
It’s like Relay for Life, but for dogs! Let Fido do his part in supporting the American Cancer Society at 10 a.m. at the South Park Fairground Museum Building. The event begins with an opening ceremony, followed by a walk, demonstrations, contests, games and vendors. This year’s theme is The Wizard of Oz. Please register for the event.

DENTAL CLINIC
July 25 to 27
Mission of Mercy Pittsburgh is seeking more than a thousand volunteers to help with a free two-day dental clinic at PPG Paints Arena. In addition to general volunteers to help with registration and coordination, they also need dentists, hygienists and other clinical professionals. The clinic is on a first-come, first-served basis, and capacity is completely dependent on the number of volunteers. If interested, please register now.
