DESTINATION MOON Saturday, September 29
For the first time ever, the Apollo 11 exhibit will leave the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, and one of its first stops is the Heinz History Center, right here in Pittsburgh! In fact, it will be the only destination east of the Mississippi to host the exhibit. Destination Moon opens at the Heinz History Center on Saturday, September 29, featuring dozens of artifacts, a 3-D tour of the spacecraft’s interior, and the Command Module Columbia, which was the only portion of the spacecraft to safely return to Earth. It is included in the cost of regular admission.
SERVE2CURE Saturday, September 15
In addition to doubles and triples tennis, Serve2Cure will also feature a new Health Expo this year on Saturday, September 15, at the Mt. Lebanon Tennis Center. Proceeds will benefit the Pittsburgh Melanoma Foundation. See page 60 for more info.
COVERED BRIDGE FESTIVAL Saturday, September 15
The 48th Annual Covered Bridge Festival on September 15 and 16 is spread across 10 locations—at eight covered bridges in Washington County and two in Greene County. Each location will feature arts and crafts, festival food, historic reenactments, demonstrations and more. Visit one bridge for a taste of the festivities or visit all 10 and make a day of it!
POOCHES IN THE POOL Monday, September 3
For one day only, you can take your dog for a swim at the South Park Wave Pool from 4 to 6 p.m., on Labor Day, September 3. Pooches must have current tags showing up-to-date vaccinations. Dogs can play in the pool for $15 each and may be accompanied by up to two guardians. $5 for additional visitors.
IRISH FESTIVAL Friday, September 7 – 9
Have some craic (Gaelic word for “fun”) at the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, September 7 to 9, at the Riverplex. Irish food and beverages, music and dancing, a marketplace and demonstrations. New this year is Celtic axe throwing, a vendor selling food imported from Ireland and hurling matches.
FESTIVAL OF BANDS Saturday, September 22
Rain or shine, the Mt. Lebanon High School Blue Devil Marching Band will take to the high school field to present its 24th annual Festival of Bands at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 22. Marching bands from other local high schools will perform their new routines, with Mt. Lebanon presenting music from The Incredibles.

HISTORY CENTER REOPENS Saturday, Sept 29
Come see the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon’s totally refurbished headquarters at the corner of Washington Road and Lebanon Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday September 29. At press time details were scarce, but there is a plan for a historical re-enactor to play the Rev. Joseph Clokey, the 1850s minister who brought back the two Cedar of Lebanon trees from Turkey that gave Mt. Lebanon its name.
HOLIDAYS AT THE JCC Sunday, Sept 16
Kids can participate in a Challah Bake and a build-a-Torah workshop from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, at the South Hills JCC. Chabad of the South Hills will also be hosting a Holiday Fair at the event.
GRANDPARENTS’ DAY Sunday, September 9
Yes, Grandparents’ Day is a thing—so on Sunday, September 9, be sure to call your Pap. It’s also a good day to take your grandparents to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, as they will receive free admission when accompanied by their grandchildren, plus a free ride-all-day tram bracelet.
TRAX FALL FESTIVAL Sundays through October
If you couldn’t wait to break out your fall wardrobe and have already had a pumpkin spice latte, then Trax Farm is the place for you this fall. On Saturdays and Sundays from September through October, you can enjoy hayrides, pumpkin patches, a corn maze, food trucks, kids’ activities and delicious farm-to-table food.
CHARITY POLO MATCH Saturday, September 15
You may be familiar with tailgating, but you’ve probably never tailgated before a polo match. Give it a try at Family House’s 35th Annual Polo Match at Hartwood Acres, which will also feature wine tasting, a silent auction, children’s activities, boutique shopping and more.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE September 27 to October 28
Pittsburgh Public Theater will kick off its 2018-2019 season with a new comedic interpretation of Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Kate Hamill and based on the popular Jane Austen novel. The show runs September 27 to October 28.
