In celebration of Pittsburgh’s bicentennial, Phipps Conservatory’s miniature railroad will focus on 200 years of Pittsburgh history. The trains will travel through 10 different time periods with miniature plants setting the stage for each scenario. Five interactive stations will allow visitors to turn a hand crank to elevate the Duquesne Incline, or push a button to light up Three Rivers Stadium for a Pirates game. vinyl revival
The music industry turned its back on vinyl records in favor of CDs back in the ’80s, which audiophiles have long said sacrifices sound quality. However, in the decade that brought us Sussudio, Ebony and Ivory, Mickey and Karma Chameleon, maybe the industry was doing us a favor.
Vinyl is making a comeback. The Mt. Lebanon Library has started compiling a small but growing collection—the only library in the county to do so—and will be showing it off on Saturday, November 5. VINYL @ the Library: Make, Listen, Learn will take place from 6:30 to 8:30.
Listen to an upbeat mix of classic, rare, eclectic music from various decades, during an all-vinyl set spun by DJ J. Malls, host of the Title Town Soul & Funk Dance Party.
Other activities include a record swap, button making (for when your band gets off the ground), creating spin art with Handmade Arcade using repurposed records, a guitar lesson courtesy of Empire Music and much more. Learn more at www.mtlebanonlibrary.org [2].
veterans’ voices
Veterans Voices, featuring stories from four Mt. Lebanon residents whose service spanned from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom, will highlight Mt Lebanon’s Veterans Week. At 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, in Mellon Middle School Auditorium, Veterans Breakfast Club founder Todd DePastino will host: Maury Deul, who participated in the invasions of Sicily and Salerno with an anti-aircraft artillery battalion and received a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge as a paratrooper; Chuck Torisky, who served as a radio operator with a field artillery battalion in the Korean War; Cavalry platoon leader Dennis Deal, who fought with the 1st Cavalry Division in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam, a battle made famous in the book and movie,We Were Soldiers; Megan Andros, West Point Class of 2006, who served with the 1st Cavalry Division as an ordnance officer. Her service included a year in Iraq.
Sunset Hills United Presbyterian Church, 900 Country Club Drive, will hold a bake sale on Saturday, December 10, from 10 a.m. to noon. Fresh baked cookies, breads, pastries and a wide variety of freezable goodies. Proceeds benefit deacons’ missions and outreach.

The Pittsburgh OASIS Intergenerational Tutor Program is seeking volunteers (50 and older) to tutor in Pittsburgh and Woodland Hills School Districts in grade K-4. A two-day training class will be conducted on Wednesday, November 16 and Friday, November 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Duquesne Light Building, 411 Seventh Avenue. No teaching experience is required and all training, materials and clearances are provided free of charge. On Sunday, December 4, at 2:30 p.m., the Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Washington and Scott roads, will present Jesus, the Advent of the Messiah, performed by an extended choir and orchestra in the church sanctuary. There will be a reception in Fellowship Hall following the program.
St. Winifred Women’s Guild will hold a spaghetti dinner, Saturday, November 12, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the church’s Benedict Hall, 550 Sleepy Hollow Road. Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, BYOB. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under and are on sale at the parish house and at the door.

The Historical Society of Mount Lebanon will host a brief program to celebrate Mt. Lebanon’s veterans on Veterans’ Day, November 11, at 5 p.m. at the Mt. Lebanon Veterans Memorial on Morgan Drive at the entrance to Mt. Lebanon Park.
