Enjoy a different kind of athletic event (and some rousing music) at the Mt. Lebanon High School field Saturday, September 24, at 7 p.m., when the Blue Devil Marching Band presents its annual Festival of Bands. Many people think the physical stamina, coordination and practice required to master an on-field band routine is comparable to that of a competitive sport. (And if you don’t believe it, Google “Is Marching Band a Sport?”) We’ll save that debate for another time, but don’t be surprised if performances by the Blue Devils, including the popular drumline, along with many area high school bands and a major college band have you cheering—and they’re all winners. That way nobody gets lost. We’re closing a couple of blocks of Washington Road for Mt. Lebanon’s Uptown Block Party, Saturday, September 10, from 6 to 10 p.m. The party, presented by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership, features music in Clearview Common by The Commonheart, games and food. The event will benefit Accessible Lebo, a nonprofit that strives to make Mt. Lebanon a great place for people of all abilities. There’s no admission but a $5 donation will buy you a wristband that will allow you to buy beer. Because there’s going to be beer. We forgot to say.
pittsburgh folk fest
The Pittsburgh Folk Festival, Pittsburgh’s oldest and largest celebration of ethnic diversity, observes its 60th year, Saturday, September 3, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, September 4, from 11 to 6, at the Schenley Tent Plaza in Oakland. The free festival showcases more than 30 cultures and includes music, dancing, craft and culinary exhibits, food from all over the world and a global marketplace filled with handcrafted and imported goods. Kingdom Kids of Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church is registering children for fall Kindergarten Enrichment. The Mt. Lebanon Police Department is looking for substitute crossing guards. All crossing guards start as subs and are eligible for regular positions when openings occur. Many subs work regularly. Pay is $13.91 an hour with a $5.25 a day travel allowance. Various 2 ½-to 4 ½-hour positions are available beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. Applicants receive training and a uniform. All guards must have a high school diploma, their own transportation and a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license. Tney also must pass a background check. Apply at Mt.
