Center for Theater Arts’ (CTA) 35th annual gala, Reach for a Star, is Saturday, March 12, at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe. It will feature a dinner, auctions and special guest Henry Krieger, the Broadway composer who with lyricist Tom Eyen created the score for Dreamgirls, earning a Tony nomination and a Grammy award. Krieger  received two Tonys for The Tap Dance Kid, and has worked on many productions over 35 years. The Mt. Lebanon Junior Women’s Club charity gala, “Spectacular! Spectacular!,” is at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 19 at the Doubletree, 1 Bigelow Square. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Education Partnership, with funds purchasing homework kits for children in local schools. Club members will assemble the kits themselves and deliver them to needy children in schools this fall. Benefit chairs are Sara Brett and Maggie Poole. Tickets [3] are $90 each. A donation button is also available on the site for people who cannot attend but would like to donate to the charity.

Pittsburgh Pharaohs Hockey’s 9th annual “Lacin’ ‘em up for MDA” charity hockey game will be at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 26, at the Mt. Lebanon Ice Center. Proceeds benefit the Pittsburgh chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Admission to the game is a $10 donation to the MDA. Raffles, prizes and a bake sale. The Dormont-Mt. Lebanon-Castle Shannon Rotary presents its 9th annual Taste of the South Hills charity event, 6 p.m., Saturday, March 19, at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church on Gilkeson Road. Food, auctions, entertainment and more. Music by Uptown Rhythm and Brass. The proceeds from the Taste of the South Hills benefit a wide variety of causes and organizations locally, nationally and internationally. Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council (GPLC) will hold its next volunteer tutor training at the Dormont Library Saturdays, March 19 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The next scheduled English as a Second Language tutor training is at Mt. The Mt. Lebanon Foundation for Education’s second annual Taste of Lebo Battle of the Appetizers is Saturday, April 16, from 2 to 5 p.m., in Clearview Common. Mt. Lebanon restaurants present the finest appetizers. Entertainment by Mt. Lebanon School District student ensembles.
