liquid reflections

Photographer Tim Anderson’s exhibition, A Cascade of Reflections and Waterfalls will be on display at the Mt. Lebanon Library through the end of January. Anderson, a member of the photographic Section of the Academy of Science and Art in Pittsburgh, says he has been fascinated by the interplay of light and water for as long as he has been taking pictures. He makes his prints the old-school way, in a darkroom, and the photos for this exhibit were taken with a Century field camera that’s nearly 100 years old.

The Historical Glass Club of Pittsburgh will hold its seventh annual antiques and collectible identification event in cooperation with Mt. Lebanon Public Library from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Sunday, January 17. The club’s team of appraisers will attempt to verbally identify all types of antiques and collectibles, including pottery, china, glass, toys, coins, furniture, primitives and ephemera. To have your items examined by the team, please bring them to the lower level of the library. Cost is $5 for two antique and collectible identifications.

Nuiko Wadden, principal harpist of the Pittsburgh Opera and Pitttsburgh Ballet Theatre orchestras, will perform at Old St. Luke’s Church, 330 Old Washington Pike in Scott Township, Sunday, February 28 at 2 p.m., as part of the church’s Chamber Music Series in cooperation with the music department of Slippery Rock University. Join the folks at Venture Outdoors for their Soup of the Month Walk, from 10 to 1, Sunday, January 17, at Schenley Park. After an invigorating three- to four-mile walk through the park, there will be…soup! Two kinds, one vegetarian, along withwith bread, hot chocolate and tea, all provided by Soup Sega! of the Bulgarian Macedonian National Educational and Cultural Center in Homestead. On Saturday, February 6, the Dukes of Dixieland from New Orleans will get a warm welcome to the frozen Pennsylvania landscape from Music for Mt. Lebanon. COMMUNITY EVENTS

Registration for the Mushroom Family Learning Center’s preschool program will begin on February 3 at 9 a.m. The learning center is now located at 1900 Cochran Road. Mushroom offers two-, three- and four-day classes for children age 2 through 6. www.mushroomfamily.org or 412-531-1225.

Medical Rescue Team South’s annual membership drive is under way. An annual fee of just $42 per individual and $65 per household covers any co-pay, deductible or balance related to ambulance billing. A household subscription covers anyone who needs an ambulance while residing in or visiting your house. The Mt. Lebanon Public Library presents “Upstairs, Downstairs: In Service in the Gilded Age,” 7 p.m., Thursday, January 21. Using Clayton, the home of Henry Clay Frick, as a backdrop the program, a presenter from the Frick Art and Historical Center will take you behind the scenes and show you what it took to run the lavish mansions of wealthy American Industrialists.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is available from February 1 through April 15 to help taxpayers who earn less than $52,000. No appointments necessary. For help, go to the Bible Chapel, 300 Gallery Drive in McMurray (five miles past South Hills Village) Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Taxpayers can receive assistance with federal, state and local wage tax returns and real estate/rent rebate and PACE applications. Please bring: W-2s, all 1099s, interest and dividend statements, social security and pension statements, totals of itemized deductions (medical, taxes, charitable) and social security cards for you, your spouse and dependents. Also bring copies of your 2014 federal and state tax returns, real estate tax receipts and receipts for large purchases such as cars. For direct deposit of refund, have your bank account and routing numbers. Bring proof of identification for yourself and your spouse.
