MARCH ON The Mt. Lebanon High School Blue Devil Marching Band will present its 21st Annual Festival of Bands on Saturday, October 3, at 7 p.m., at Mt. Lebanon Stadium, rain or shine. Other area high school bands performing include, Taylor Allderdice, Brashear, Chartiers Valley, Cornell, Shaler, and more. There will also be special performances by The Mt. Lebanon Drum and Frontline, and the Mt. Lebanon 8th Grade Band.
BOO! The library’s annual Fright Night is a celebration of all things spooky. This year’s event is 6:30 p.m., Friday, October 23, and you can expect thrills and chills for the entire family, free refreshments at Franken’s Diner, scary books for sale at The Book Cellar, activities, crafts and tons of fun. THE THING THAT’S HAPPENING Last month, we told you everything we knew about a mysterious uptown event that had no name—yet.Well, we know a little more now. We know it’s going to be a block party. And we know it’s going to be held uptown. Once we had those two bits of intelligence, we were able to connect the dots—it’s the Uptown Block Party. If that name happens to change before October 17, we will still have local bands Donora and Beauty Slap, along with beer, buskers,
and giant life-sized games. Presented by Mt. Lebanon Partnership and sponsored by Wilson-McGinley and Venture Outdoors, the Uptown Block Party will run from 5 to 10 p.m. on the 17th. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for Accessible Lebo, a group that aims to make life easier for people with special needs, including intellectual and/or physical challenges.
A LITTLE PIZZAZZ Pizzazz, the Garden Club of Allegheny County’s 20th annual shopping-event fundraiser is Thursday, October 15 through Saturday, October 17 at the Fox Chapel Golf Club. Along with returning favorites such as Catch All, Janet Egan and Crème de la Crème, the benefit will feature 15 new vendors and Orchid Originals, a booth that will present demonstrations by club members of elegant designs with orchids.
Tickets to Thursday’s Preview Party are $125. Friday and Saturday shopping day admission for each day is $10, or $40 with a buffet lunch. Pizzazz has raised more than $1 million so far. Proceeds support gardening and botanical projects across the region.

Best known for their 1959 hit, Since I Don’t Have You, Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners are a doo-wop group from Pittsburgh. And it’s not just originals; they cover the likes of the Four Seasons to Guns N’ Roses. They’ve hit the top 40 with songs This I Swear and Pennies from Heaven. Other classics include It Happened Today (1959), Close Your Eyes (1961) and Comes Love (1962). Current group members include Jimmy Beaumont, Donna Groom, Nick Pociask, Rick Morris and Mark Groom.

Topic of this month’s program is Women in the Workplace. Women earn on average 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Many report additional challenges, including: pregnancy discrimination, nursing accommodations, harassment, and access to maternity leave.
