The South Hills Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m., on Monday May 25, in Brookline and concludes at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. At 7 p.m., there will be a ceremony at the Mt. Lebanon Veterans Memorial, at the Cedar Boulevard entrance to Mt. Lebanon Park. Music by the South Hills Chorale, an address by Navy Commander Stephany Hartstirn, a reading of the names inscribed in the monument, and the retirement of the flag.

It’s that time of year again, finally, when locally grown produce is just a short hop down Washington Road. Mt. Lebanon Partnership’s Uptown Farmers Market, sponsored by WesBanco, kicks off May 16 in Washington Road’s central business district Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon through October 31. The Lions Club Farmers Market, at the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church, 975 Washington Road, will start up again on Wednesdays in June. [2]On Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ long-anticipated May Market will bring together staff horticulturists, garden clubs, nurseries, farms and other vendors on its sustainably managed front lawn.
At the market are organic herbs and vegetable seedlings; tropical plants and succulents; low-maintenance perennials and shrubs on Phipps’ Top 10 Sustainable Plants lists; native and rain garden plants; and many other seasonal favorites. Also available, everything from organic soil and landscaping materials to botanical art and natural body care products. Phipps’ staff and master gardeners will be on hand to share advice. Best of all, sample the market’s traditional hand-dipped fondant strawberries. On May 8, in honor of National Public Gardens Day, guests can also enjoy 50 percent off Conservatory admission and get a peek at the Summer Flower Show, opening May 2 to showcase wild, weird and wonderful plants. Mt. Lebanon’s sixth annual
relay for life
[4]kicks off at 9 a.m., on Saturday, May 30, at the Mt. Lebanon High School Stadium. The 24-hour vigil and fundraiser for the American Cancer Society has brought in more than $1 million over the last five years. Relay teams circle the high school track for 24 hours as a way of commemorating cancer victims and celebrating survivors. During the relay, at least one person from each of the teams takes a turn walking or running the track. The day also features music and other entertainment, food and craft booths and special events, such as the Survivor Lap, when relayers clear the track for cancer survivors, and a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m., with candles bearing the names of loved ones who are survivors, are fighting the disease or have died.
