Have a budding John Bonham in the house? Enroll him or her in Adventures In Percussion Camp, to be held June 23 through 26 and June 30 through July 2 at Mellon Middle School.Classes taught by Mt. Lebanon School District’s percussion staff include marching percussion for sixth- and seventh-grade students,  and Brazilian and African percussion, percussion theory/fundamentals/concert ensemble and industrial percussion (Stomp!) for fourth- and fifth-graders.

Bonnie and Art Bishop from the Pittsburgh Rose Society will present “More Beautiful Gardens in Italy,” 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at the library. The program will feature seven historical Italian gardens from the Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany and Veneto regions. The Bishops—frequent travelers to Italy and avid gardeners—will show exquisite photographs of the gardens, discuss the history of the sites and provide tips for travelers to Italian gardens. They also will offer design ideas for incorporating roses into Western Pennsylvania gardens. The program is free.

In his 84 years, Norman Rockwell painted 321 Saturday Evening Post covers and the portraits of Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. His work portrayed civil rights issues, poverty and space exploration, as well as sweet scenes of family life, scouting and the joys of childhood. At 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, at the library, the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon will present “The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell,” with art historian Julie Agar. A personal friend of Rockwell, Agar will share her knowledge of the artist’s fascinating life and iconic work, including his Saturday Evening Post covers and the Four Freedoms series that defined the nation during the 1930s and 1940s.  She will also discuss her take on American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell, the controversial new biography about Rockwell. The event is free and refreshments will be served.
