PLANT A TREE, LOVE THE EARTH Mt. Lebanon will observe Arbor Day with a tree-planting ceremony at Howe School, 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 24. Coordinated by Principal Michelle Murray, the day will include student poetry readings and music performances. Mt. Lebanon has been recognized as a Tree City USA for the past nine years.

The next day—Saturday, April 25—is Mt. Lebanon’s Earth Day celebration in Mt. Lebanon Park. Bring the entire family for this fun event, running 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Girl Scouts will provide children’s activities, and local environmental nonprofits, businesses and crafters will be on hand with activities, crafts and green tips. There also will be food and music.

MOVING RIGHT ALONG  The Denis Theatre may not yet be open but that does not mean the board and volunteers aren’t feverishly raising money and planning fun events around town. Fund-raisers for the Washington Road landmark are in the middle of a large capital campaign, as architects from Balong, Steines, Hendricks & Manchester Architects, of Youngstown, Ohio are finishing the design phase for a complete renovation of the historic theater. Also, the theater’s roof has been repaired.

Denis_2004_Sandra_WardPlans call for refurbishing four distinct areas of the theater: a 200-seat main theater, a 100-seat small theater, a 40-seat learning center and a visual forum lounge. The theater will specialize in first-run independent films, documentaries and foreign films. The space also will allow for music, visual art, film series, classes and discussions, and could be rented for parties.

Several events are on tap for April:

April 19 is a Reel to Real movie discussion at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont (film to be determined); April 22 is “Meet Me at the Movies,” presented in cooperation with the Artists for Alzheimer’s (ARTZ) program, when people with dementia and their caregivers can enjoy a film and chat. April 28 is another installment of Movie Trivia Night, at Walnut Grill, at 7 p.m.
