commissioner’s column: Steve Silverman

After a chilly start to spring, summer is finally here. The last day of school in the district is Friday, June 10.  As you make your summer plans, consider the fun summer time activities we have here in Mt. Lebanon. Below is a description of just a few of the highlights:

Beginning June 27, Mt. Lebanon will host the West Penn Pro-Am Tennis Tournament. Please stop by the Tennis Center to see these talented players or just to play a set or two with a friend. We have 15 clay courts, 10 of which have lights, and our Junior Tennis programs run from mid-June until late August.

There are lots of activities in Mt. Lebanon Park during the summer. As you make your July 4 plans, in addition to the annual Mt. Lebanon July 4 celebration, the Mt. Lebanon Girls Softball Association holds its All-Star games on Dixon Field that day. If you like outdoor music, drop by for one of our free concerts. Bring a chair or a blanket to one of these musically varied concerts that occur once a month on the basketball courts starting at 7:30 p.m.

Picnic at Mt. Lebanon Park pavilion

A few years ago, my family rented one of the picnic pavilions in Mt. Lebanon Park for my daughter’s birthday party. It was a wonderful spot to celebrate for our guests of all ages. In addition to Mt. Lebanon Park, there are nice pavilions available for rent in Bird and Williamsburg parks.

The Washington Road Business District has a number of fun activities. For car lovers, there is the Car Cruise, sponsored by the Mt. Lebanon Police Association, which will take place Sunday, July 31.  Stop by and check out the great vintage cars. There will be three First Friday celebrations this summer: June 3, July 1, and August 5. These festive street fairs begin at 7 p.m., and have live music and street performers. On Saturday mornings from 9 until noon, farmers sell their produce along Washington Road near Washington School and the Municipal Building. On the second Saturday of the month, there is live music as well.  Further down Washington Road is the Lions Club Farmers Market which is held every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church Parking lot.

Whether you are a regular golfer or new to the game, Mt. Lebanon has a nine-hole golf course with discounts for both junior and senior golfers. While the rates are higher on the weekends, it is still a good value, and golf carts are available. Join our Frequent Player Discount program.

If you are looking for a way to avoid the heat, the Mt. Lebanon Library offers a number of activities for kids and adults. Enjoy reading a book in a cool corner of the main room, join a book club, or practice your Italian. For a list of activities, visit MtLebanonLibrary.org.

Our newly renovated swimming pool is a fan favorite for all to enjoy. The Swim Center is open daily, weather permitting (see www.mtlebanon.org/DocumentCenter/View/4227 for hours). The 50-meter pool has a double slide and a rock climbing wall. The zero-depth design is welcoming for kids of all ages. The pool can also be rented for private parties after regular hours.

Whatever activity you prefer, we hope you will have a fun and safe summer here in Mt. Lebanon.
