One of the things that makes Mt. Lebanon a great place to live and work is the abundance of shopping and dining options. The Mt. Lebanon Commercial Districts Office is responsible supporting the businesses and professional organizations in our three main business districts—Washington Road, Beverly Road and Castle Shannon Boulevard.

This support includes planning special events, in conjunction with the Mt. Lebanon Partnership, Mt. Lebanon’s nonprofit development corporation.

Signature events are Washington Road’s Lebo Light Night in November and Beverly Brite Night in December; the First Friday street fairs on Washington Road on the first Friday of June, July and August; the Uptown Farmers Market and the Mt. Lebanon Artists’ Market.

The office and the partnership also take responsibility for maintaining flower beds along Washington Road for three seasons, and most recently, decorating the empty beds with student-written haiku posters in winter.

The commercial districts officer is also the staff liaison to the economic development council, a seven-member board charged with advising the Mt. Lebanon Commission on economic and community development. The council meets at 7:30 a.m., on the last Friday of the month. All dates subject to COVID-19 cancellations.

First Fridays

On the first Friday of each month in June, July and August, Washington Road is usually host to a street party, centered around a concert in Clearview Common, but this year the schedule is in question because of the pandemic.  This year’s lineup:

June 5 – Fungus, a Grateful Dead cover band CANCELLED

July 3 – Dan Petrich, a Mt. Lebanon singer-songwriter whose most recent album, Of Monsters, Gods and Men, was featured on WYEP’s Local 913 series, which focuses on local musicians. 

August 7 – Christopher Mark Jones, a Mt. Lebanon singer-songwriter

Competition

CANCELLED Speaking of singer-songwriters, Clearview Common will also be the site of the WYEP Singer Songwriter Competition in August. Last year was the first time the competition was held anywhere outside of the city, and Mt. Lebanon proved to be a good fit. Beginning mid-summer, the competition usually consists of four preliminary rounds, with 12 contestants moving on to the finals in September. The top three winners, chosen by a panel of local music professionals, receive prizes and special performance opportunities. Until last year, the entire competition has been held in downtown Pittsburgh. Tentative dates this summer are August 8 and 22.

Uptown Market

The Uptown Market runs from 9 to noon every Saturday from Mother’s Day weekend to the end of October, and features food vendors, crafts and activities. New this year is Hitchhiker Brewing’s Nomad Beer Truck. On the second Saturday of the months, the Mackin Family Bluegrass Band will perform on the stage near WesBanco.

Mt. Lebanon Artists’ Market

This year’s Mt. Lebanon Artists’ Market is a little bit later than usual—Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4, due to the Jewish holidays in September. The weekend always includes music, art demonstrations and popular local food trucks.

Mt. Lebanon’s business districts celebrate the holiday season with signature events. Uptown Lebo Light Night, beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, will features horse-drawn carriages, a tree lighting ceremony, festive music, a visit from Santa and more. Beverly Brite Nite, beginning at 7 on Thursday, December 3, will have similar activities, but the biggest attraction for the kids is the chance to play on Beverly Road, which will be shut down for the occasion.
