Citizens Fire Academy: Ignite Your Passion

Ever dreamed of becoming a firefighter, but not sure if you’re cut out for the job? You could be a candidate for Citizens Fire Academy.

Citizens Fire Academy, an eight week public education class underway now, is offered by the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department annually.

It’s taught by firefighters whose hands-on demonstrations give the 25 participants a chance to see how the department operates.

“Tonight, they’re learning how to put out fires with fire extinguishers, they’re learning how to put out fires with inch-and-three-quarter hand lines, and they’re learning big water, so they’re putting out larger fires with a step gun that blows 500 gallons of water every minute,” said Lt. Steve Noorbakhsh.

Chris Peterson, whose son is a volunteer firefighter in Mt. Lebanon, is following in the footsteps of his wife, who took the class four years ago. “It’s so interesting learning about what my son does. It’s cool,” he said.

The annual Citizens Fire Academy is free of charge and open to all Mt. Lebanon residents and business owners age 18 and older. This year, the program wraps up with a burn day at Washington County Fire Academy on November 4 and a recognition dinner the following week.
