Last month, Mt. Lebanon honored the volunteers who serve on our 17 municipal advisory  boards and authorities, some of whom were completing their terms. Just beginning their terms are 13 new resident volunteers:

Dennis Hates, Seminole Drive, Board of Appeals; Christopher Heck, Oxford Boulevard and Joseph Kramer, Vernon Drive, Economic Development Council; Sarah Levinthal, Woodhaven Drive, Environmental Sustainability Board; Brendan Kelly, Coolidge Avenue, Historic Preservation Board; William Pope, Shady Lane, Library Board; Paul Kraus, Duquesne Drive and Rich Marchione, Crystal Drive, Pension Advisory Board; Andrew George, Thornwood Drive, Planning Board; Tom Donati, Pinewood Drive, Sports Advisory Board; Christopher Sloan, Coolidge Avenue, Traffic Board; Hillary Taylor, Pinewood Drive and Matthew Clark, Lebanon Avenue, Zoning Hearing Board.

Applications to serve on boards are available at the municipal building, 710 Washington Road, or online.

If you applied for a board and did not get selected, your application will remain on file for two years and will be consided if a vacancy occurs mid-term, which is a common occurrence.

Here are a few boards to consider:

Community Relations

Mediates neighborhood disputes, promotes diversity, inclusion and appreciation of various cultures, identifies service gaps and recently  launched the Mt. Lebanon Residents Academy.

Economic Development Council

Advises on economic and community development and economic growth strategies. In addition to seven voting members, it has representatives from the school board, the Mt. Lebanon Partnership, the historic preservation board, the Washington and Beverly Road business communities, the planning board and the South Hills Chamber of Commerce.

Environmental Sustainability

Advises and engages the public on matters relating to environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental awareness.

Historic Preservation

Advises about historic preservation and its role in economic development. Educates residents about how to preserve historic properties, identifies historically significant buildings and other historic  resources. Recommends policies for park use, organizes cleanup programs, develops public-private partnerships to promote preservation.   

Parks Advisory

Advises about  parks and open spaces. Promotes resource protection. Recommends policies for park development and programming.

Parking Facility

Recommends strategies for more efficient use of parking resources; meets with business and property owners to review parking facility issues.

Planning

Reviews plans for construction, development and redevelopment; advises the commission on planning and zoning; reviews and recommends zoning ordinance amendments and land development regulations.

Sports Advisory

Promotes sports programs; gathers public input and recommends possible changes to sports facilities.

Traffic

Hears citizen concerns about traffic. Recommends improvements that will improve the flow and safety of traffic and the enforcement of traffic laws.

Zoning Hearing

A quasi-judicial board that decides appeals to the Mt. Lebanon Zoning Ordinance and requests for variances and special exceptions.
