Before you start work
No matter how small your home remodeling project is, you can save yourself a lot of headaches by checking in with the Mt. Lebanon Inspection Office. Call 412-343-3408 from 8:30 to 5 on weekdays. Inspectors can advise you on how to make sure your project meets zoning and planning requirements.
You can make an appointment to talk with an inspector in person, between 2 and 5 p.m., on the first Wednesday of the month. Appointments are 30 minutes each, and you’ll need to preregister at 412-343-3408 no later than 4 p.m. the Friday before your meeting. Please provide your name, address of project, phone number, email and the project or topic you wish to discuss.
Zoning permits and some construction projects require the property owner to provide a survey of the property. Generally residential building permits can be issued within 15 business days and commercial permits within 30 days. Zoning permits, for projects such as air conditioning units, driveways, fences and sheds, are reviewed within 30 days. Once an inspector reviews and approves the application, you will be notified by email and/or phone that the permit is ready and the total amount due.
Approved permit cards must be prominently displayed in a window visible from the street. Copies of approved plans with the inspector’s notes must be on site at all times.
If your construction project requires the use of a dumpster, placing it on the street requires a permit; call the police department’s traffic division at 412-343-4086 for details.
You can find permit applications and handouts on mtlebanon.org, scrolling down on the home page to Quick Links, Building Permits, or pick them up in person at the Mt. Lebanon Customer Service Center, 710 Washington Road, also open weekdays from 8:30 to 5.
