GROWING TOGETHER: CONNECTING WITH NATURE This series aims to connect people with nature. Nature in Our Backyards, at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 9, looks at ways to make your yard more wildlife-friendly. Gabi Hughes, an environmental educator at the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, will lead this family-friendly program. At 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 26, is the Yin and Yang of Yardening. Learn how to create a wildlife sanctuary in your yard and then how to better co-exist with all the other creatures in our suburban world. Presenter Faith Starr is a nutritional therapist, naturalist, wild foods advocate and herbalist.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE The library’s annual A Novel Affair fundraiser is 6 p.m., Saturday, October 8, at the library. This year’s theme, A “Knight” in Camelot, celebrates chivalry, mystical magic and courtly romance. This after-hours party includes food, champagne and some signature cocktails, live music and more. For adults 21 and over. Tickets are $30 in advance at the library or at www.mtlebanonlibrary.org and $35 at the door.

HOT TICKET Tickets are still available for this year’s Joseph Wertheim Memorial Author Lecture, 7 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, at Mellon Middle School auditorium. Alexander McCall Smith, author of more than 100 books, but best known for his internationally acclaimed No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, is this year’s speaker.

This event honors the memory of Joseph Wertheim, long-time library patron who had served nine years on the library board, including a term as president, and also served as the president of the Friends of Mt. Lebanon Public Library.

General admission tickets to the lecture and book signing are $20. tickets can also be purchased  at the library. McCall Smith’s books will be available to purchase, or bring your own book, and he’ll sign it.
