WRIGHT STUFF Dr. Cleon Cornes will discuss “The Life and Work of Frank Lloyd Wright,” 10 a.m., Fridays, July 6 through August 17, at the library. The class will use audio-visual materials to review the struggles, conflicts and achievements of Wright—arguably America’s greatest architect—and the different periods of his career, including Taliesin (east and west), Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob.

ANIMAL ATTRACTION Whether you like them furry, feathered or scaly, bring your pet to the library’s annual Pet Show, 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, July 15, to show off him/her/it and win prizes. Every pet will go home a winner.

PLAY BALL! Walter Patton of the Heinz History Center will take an in-depth look at 125 years of baseball history with his talk “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” 7 p.m., Monday, July 30. The program will include information about the first World Series game in 1903 and will include “ballpark” refreshments.

ROCKING IN THE GARDEN The library’s courtyard is a beautiful, quiet place to read a book or watch the hummingbirds—that is if it’s not a Concert in the Courtyard evening. On those nights, the garden is a rockin’. The popular free series returns 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 26, with The PM Winds Project, a flute and clarinet duo. Musicians Amanda Morrison and Dan Parasky will lead a pre-concert discussion on the education, life and work of today’s musicians. The concert series continues in August with the Boilermaker Jazz Band (August 2), American folk musician Nan Hoffman (August 9), indie/acoustic musician Matt Otis(August 16) and the classical sounds of the Mt. Lebanon High School String Quartet (August 23).

ALL DAY ALL STAR WARS The Garrison Carida, a group of community-minded volunteers who portray the nefarious “Dark Side” characters of the Star Wars films, will march into the library’s Star Wars Extravaganza Saturday, August 11. Kids will (hopefully) love meeting the Garrison Carida’s Stormtroopers—“The World’s Definitive Imperial Star Wars Costuming Organization” (endorsed and preferred by Lucasfilm Ltd.!)—but if they want no part of Darth Vader’s minions, the day-long event also includes Star Wars themed snacks, games, crafts and activities.

GARDENS ON TOUR For the last 22 years, Mt. Lebanon Library has managed to dig up a handful of new gardens to feature on its annual garden tour. This year the self-guided tour spotlights seven—all designed and maintained primarily by men. The “Gentlemen Gardeners” tour runs noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 8, and features the gardens of David Blair, Chuck Brodbeck, Alan London, John Polena, Kevin Kirkland, Rob Papke and Rafael Sciullo, the president and CEO of Family Hospice and Palliative Care, who designed the gardens around the hospice campus on Moffett Street. Tickets for the self-guided tour are $15 in advance (at the library) and $20 the day of the tour. From noon to 5 p.m., the library will host a plant sale in front of the building along Castle Shannon Boulevard. All specimens are donated from local gardens and are appropriate for the growing conditions in Western Pennsylvania. Master gardeners and consulting rosarians will be on site to answer gardening questions and to help patrons with their garden planning. You can start enjoying Mt. Lebanon’s gardens a day early at the library’s Garden Party 6 p.m., Saturday, July 7. The library’s courtyard is a little hidden gem filled with flowers and vegetables. Information will be available about the plants. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres donated by Mt. Lebanon restaurants, complementary wine and beer, live music and raffles. Tickets are $30 per person in advance and at the door.
