The Denis Theatre on Washington Road won’t reopen for some time, but you’d never know it from all the fun things the board has planned this summer.

Celebrate the summer solstice at the Denis Theatre Foundation’s summer gala, Here Comes the Sun, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 20, at the Reed Smith Center, downtown.

During the evening, the foundation’s board will bestow the Tapestry Award for excellence in the arts to the creative team behind the play and film version of The Chief, about beloved Pittsburgh Steeler founding owner Art Rooney Sr. The awardees are writers Rob Zellers and Gene Collier, actor Tom Atkins, Pittsburgh Public Theater Artistic Director Ted Pappas, director Steve Parys and Tom Chaffee, managing partner of The Chief movie.

The event, a fundraiser to help the efforts to renovate and reopen the 75-year-old theater, will feature entertainment, libations, gourmet food stations and an auction.

The foundation’s Last Saturday Cinema, a summer outdoor movie series, kicks off June 29 with Harvey, the 1950 comedy/drama in which Jimmy Stewart plays Elwood P. Dowd, a mild-mannered man who just happens to have an invisible friend resembling a 6-foot-tall rabbit. The movie was scheduled for last summer but was rained out. On July 27 is Peter Pan, a re-released Disney animated classic sure to enchant all ages. On August 24 (OK, not really a last Saturday, but close) is Standing in the Shadows of Motown, a 2002 documentary about the Funk Brothers—a group of Detroit musicians who backed up dozens of Motown artists.

The movies are free, but a $5 donation is welcome. All movies will be shown at dusk at Clearview Common. If it rains, the screening will be at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 799 Washington Road. The audience is invited to join a lively discussion at Walnut Grill—across from Clearview Common—after each movie.
