around town

Come on in! The water’s fine. The Mt. Lebanon Swim Center opens on Saturday, May 27. Buy your season passes at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department offices. Visit the recreation department section at www.mtlebanon.org, for pricing. Day passes are $8 for all day and $6 for after 6 p.m.

ART’S POPPING UP In addition to the regular festivities, this month’s First Friday, on June 2, will be the debut of a pop-up art gallery next to La Pomponnée on Washington Road. The gallery will showcase the works of three Pittsburgh artists—including two Mt. Lebanon grads—and the three high school artists they are mentoring. The gallery will be open for a two-week run. Artists August Vernon and Kelly Mays are 1986 MLHS alums. They are joined by artist Deborah Holtschlag and art students Hannah Wu, Duncan Chamberlin and Paulina Braverman. Grand opening is at 7 p.m. For hours and more information, call 412-225-2435 or email kellybrown3355@gmail.com [1].

MUSIC IN THE AIR If live music and dancing is your thing, the Mt. Lebanon Partnership has four events you can’t miss.

First is the First Friday free concert series in Clearview Common the first Friday of every summer month. June 2 is the Grievous Angels (roots rock and soul), July 7 is The Red Beans and Rice Combo (rock/R&B/jazzy/blues) and August 4 is Fungus (Grateful Dead style). All shows are 7 to 10 p.m. in Clearview Common on Washington Road.

On Saturday, September 16, Radio Tokyo will headline the Uptown Block Party, a street party with beer, dancing and food. Five dollars will get you a wristband that lets you purchase beer from local craft breweries. Money collected goes to Accessible Lebo, a nonprofit that seeks to make Mt. Lebanon accessible to people of all abilities. Projects have included accessible play equipment in Mt. Lebanon Park and a water fountain in Clearview Common.

CAN WE UPGRADE UPTOWN? If you think so, we hope you’ll share your ideas with evolveEA, the Pittsburgh-based sustainable architectural and consulting firm Mt. Lebanon has hired to conduct an Uptown Public Space Improvement Study. EvolveEA will conduct two public input sessions at the municipal building, on Monday, June 12 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building and the other in July (visit www.mtlebanon.org [2] for details).

Commercial Districts Manager Eric Milliron, who is working closely with evolveEA, hopes residents, business owners and others who live and work in or patronize our business districts will take this opportunity to talk about short and long-term changes they would like to see, beginning with the streetscape.

First up are new sidewalks, light poles and conduits proposed for the 2018 Capital Improvement Budget. Next up is, well, that’s what we want to discuss.

“Everything’s on the table,” says Milliron.
