MOGADISHU MILE For 10 years, the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department and the Mt. Lebanon Police Department have hosted the Mogadishu Mile, an inspiring but non-competitive 5K that participants can run or walk. CrossFit Mt. Lebanon and Mecka Fitness joined the party a few years into it and added a fun (and competitive!) element to the event, with a four-person team challenge. It adds up to a lot of sweating and a lot of money raised for a good cause, usually a veterans’ organization.
This year’s Mogadishu Mile is Friday, October 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jefferson Middle School track. Proceeds will go to support police officer Jerrod Withrow, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in August. Lisa Withrow, his wife, is a U.S. Air Force veteran. The cost is $30 per person and $120 for a team of four people. Register online at mtlfd.org [1] or at tinyurl.com/y2f4lgrr [2]. You can also register onsite on race day, but you are not guaranteed a T-shirt. The Mogadishu Mile commemorates the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, when United States Army Rangers and Delta Force operators had to get from a helicopter crash scene to a rally point with members of the 10th Mountain Division with little ammunition and no Humvees to use for cover, as originally planned. That event, the inspiration for the movie Black Hawk Down, is often the inspiration for 5K events across the country near the event’s October 3 anniversary.
ARTISTS’ MARKET CANCELLATION The 2020 Mt. Lebanon Artists’ Market, scheduled for October 3 and 4, has been cancelled, but you can continue to support local art and the Artists’ Market Scholarship Fund. The main source of funding for this annual scholarship are the proceeds from the raffle at the market—the Partnership needs your support now more than ever to ensure this scholarship will be available to Mt. Lebanon art students in the future.
