School starts Monday, August 27. This has repercussions all over town.

First and foremost, there are the crabby kids who NEED to go back to school (this is a direct quote from a mom who may have been a little on the crabby side herself).

There is the shortage of lifeguards at the pool, because school has started for the big kids already, which calls for some creative problem-solving from the folks at the recreation department to insure adequate coverage, including borrowing lifeguards from other pools and juggling pool hours. Beginning Monday, the pool switches to reduced hours of operation. Hours are from 4 – 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with adult swims from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Labor Day weekend hours are noon  to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday with adult swims from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday.

And finally, there is the stepped-up traffic enforcement in and around the school zones (you’ve been warned).

Other stuff that’s happening:

There will be an electronic equipment recycling event tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the public works building, 1250 Lindendale Drive.  Items that will be accepted at the free event include televisions, computer monitors, laptops, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, radios, telephones and cell phones, VCR and DVD players, appliance and car batteries, video games, household appliances and major appliances. If you can’t make it tomorrow, there will be another event the last Saturday in September.

Tomorrow’s “Last Saturday Cinema,” which benefits the Denis Theatre Foundation, will show “Lars and the Real Girl” in Clearview Common at 8 p.m. in memory of board member Joe Wertheim, who passed away earlier this month.

PUBLIC WORKS Niando Construction has completed replacing curbs along Spruceton Avenue. Excavation has been completed on Elatan, and the base lift of asphalt has been installed. Final paving of Elatan will take place on Monday. The contractor is currently excavating Valleyview and replacing curbs on Thornycroft.

FIRE The fire department responded to 25 incidents for the week, including two accidents with injuries and the removal of an occupant from a stalled elevator; and nine hazardous condition calls, including three flammable liquid spills and two gas lines struck by contractors.

POLICE An 18-year-old male was arrested on Mabrick Avenue on an outstanding warrant and also charged with possession of marijuana; There were two public drunkenness arrests; A 40-year-old male was arrested on Academy Avenue for simple assault and a 38-year-old female was arrested for criminal trespass; There was one mental health commitment of a 20-year-old male this week and two protection-from-abuse orders were filed against Mt. Lebanon residents.
