Emma Chothani, Mt. Lebanon Class of 2020, has earned a Girl Scout Gold Award. The award, the Girl Scouts’ highest honor, recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable projects that address important community needs.
Chothani created a music tutoring program partnering Mt. Lebanon High School with Pittsburgh Public School’s Westwood Elementary School after Westwood received budget cuts to its music education program.
Chothani was one of Mt. Lebanon’s junior commissioners in her senior year. She also was Student Council vice president for three years. She is attending McGill University in Montreal, majoring in environmental science.
Artist and Baptist Manor resident Pat Miyamoto is the winner of the Merrick Master Exhibition, at Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton. Miyamoto’s painting, I Yam American, was selected from a field of 64 entries. Miyamoto, 80, has been painting since she was in high school and holds a bachelor’s degree in art studio from Randolph College, formerly Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, in Lynchburg, Virginia. “This award makes me feel a little like Grandma Moses, being recognized for my art now,” she says.
Tressa Glover and Don DiGiulio, Cedar Boulevard, recently launched a podcast to help connect Pittsburghers during this time of uncertainty. Each episode features real-life stories from local people about times when someone changed their lives for the better. The Yinz Are Good podcast, which is available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, had four episodes at the time of publication, each featuring stories from different parts of the city and ranging from 21 to 41 minutes in length. Glover and DiGiulio run the nonprofit theater company, NoName Players. They hope this new project will help neighbors to “share some good with each other,” Glover says.
MORE MARKET Usually the Uptown Market is all wrapped up by now, but because of demand, the Mt. Lebanon Partnership is going to keep the Saturday farmers market and bazaar going for another month. The market’s hours are 9 a.m. to noon, on Washington Road. Commercial Districts manager Eric Milliron says the market will incorporate more arts and crafts this month to keep the market fresh.
