Above & Beyond

Halloween, like everything else, is going to be a little different this year. We’re not having a parade, kids will be wearing masks underneath their masks, and trick or treaters will need to maintain a couple of yardsticks’ distance from each other. But these Magnolia Place kids are still in the spirit. Howard Hanna Real Estate is sponsoring a house decorating contest, with proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund. And even though this year’s Pumpkin Patch Parade is on hold, we have some great shots from last year’s festivities on page 46-47. By now you’re probably tired of hearing “We’ll get through this,” but—we’ll get through this. /photo: Amy Martin
Leonid Matros

Leonid Matros is the 2020 recipient of Mt. Lebanon High School’s Lt. Terrence Mulkeen Memorial Scholarship. Matros is a state-ranked chess player and award-winning Mathematic Olympiad, was first violinist in the high school orchestra, a member of the National Honor Society and a four-year letterman on the swim team, serving as captain. He is attending the University of South Carolina where he plans to major in business. The $7,000 scholarship was created to honor the memory of Mulkeen, a 1977 Mt. Lebanon High School graduate who became a Navy fighter pilot and was killed in a training accident in 1991. Requirements for application are a 3.25 GPA and lettering in a varsity sport.

 
Rachel Midea

The Friends of the Mt. Lebanon Public Library has awarded the 2020 Mt. Lebanon Public Library Scholarship to Rachel Midea, Mt. Lebanon High School Class of 2020.  The scholarship includes a cash award of $3,000. Midea volunteered more than 120 hours at the library during her four years at Mt. Lebanon High School. Her high school achievements include induction into the Cum Laude Society and National Honor Society.  She also earned varsity letters in band and rifle, and is attending Penn State University to study engineering.

“Librarians would ask for her by name to help with their scheduled events, and I could always count on her to do an excellent job,” says library volunteer coordinator Ginny Fickman.

 
Ron Wilcher

Former Mt. Lebanon High School soccer coach Ron Wilcher has been nominated to the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Wilcher was the head coach for 31 seasons, with six WPIAL championships, one PIAA runner-up trophy, 17 section titles and five advancements to the PIAA semifinals. He previously won the Coach of the Year award in the section, district and state, and served as the president of the Western Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association for 22 years. Wilcher also directed the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department’s soccer summer camps, as well as the Mt. Lebanon Soccer Academy from 1985-2015. Wilcher retired in 2015, but continues to volunteer as a coach at the high school.
