Ian Happ

Mt. Lebanon High School graduate and Chicago Cubs left fielder Ian Happ received his third consecutive Gold Glove award. Given out by the Rawling baseball glove company since 1957, the Gold Glove honors the best defenders at each position in the National and American leagues. Major league managers and coaches account for 75 percent of the selection process within their own league, while the remaining 25 percent is based on analytics and statistics known as sabermetrics.

Happ is the only outfielder in Cubs history to win three consecutive Gold Gloves.

GREAT ALUMNI The Mt. Lebanon School District has recognized four Mt. Lebanon High School graduates with its Great Alumni Award. The award, now in its 19th year, is a project of the high school student council, which chooses the awardees with input from a selection committee composed of students, faculty, administrators and past award recipients. The committee selects recipients based on exceptional work in improving the lives of others, involvement in community service or achievement in a professional field. This year’s honorees are:

Paige Kassalen, Class of 2011, began her career as the only American engineer working with Solar Impulse 2, the first solar-powered airplane to circumnavigate the globe. She has worked in the manufacturing, finance and defense industries, developing implementation strategies for a range of emerging technology trends, from autonomous vehicles to machine learning. She served as the chief operating officer at CrowdAI, a startup recognized by Forbes as one of the most promising AI companies in 2021. She is an advocate for women in STEAM and has published more than 50 articles for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Laura Catena, Class of 1996, is the founder and president of The ArmOR Hand Gloves, which she developed after a life-threatening injury she endured while working in emergency medicine. The glove is used to safely handle animals without the use of force, reducing injuries to humans, improving animal welfare, and advancing the cause of wildlife and pets. Catena was awarded a Fear Free Preferred Product certification for the gloves and was a recipient of the Pet Age 2021 Women of Influence Award.

Lynn Scarlett, Class of 1967, retired in December 2021 from The Nature Conservancy, the largest conservation organization in the world, where she served as global chief external affairs officer. Prior to her role at the Conservancy, Lynn worked with the U.S. Department of the Interior from 2001 to 2009, serving as deputy secretary/chief operating officer of the department. She continues to serve on numerous publications on collaborative conservation, network governance, adaptive management, climate adaptation, science and decision making, and related topics.

Sarah Silver Manzke, Class of 2004, is an accomplished violinist who co-founded Agarita, a nonprofit organization in San Antonio, Texas, that “nourishes the local community through artistic collaborations, education, community engagement, and free, adventurous programming.” In addition to being the CFO and a principal musician for Agarita, Manzke is also the chief growth officer overseeing the sales, marketing, and development for Blue Skies of Texas, which provides continuous senior care in the region.
