MERIT SCHOLARS At the beginning of each school year, about 1.5 million high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Competition. The first step is to take either the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test or the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 16,000 top scorers are named semifinalists in the competition. In February, about 15,000 semifinalists will be selected as finalists, and of that group, about 7,250 will receive $2,500 scholarships.
