EXPERIENCE KITS When’s the last time you visited the Heinz History Center? The Mt. Lebanon Public Library can hook you up with four free tickets, good for the center, the Fort Pitt Museum and the Meadowcroft Rockshelter. Packaged along with some multimedia background materials, the Heinz History Center Experience Kit is one of several that you can check out for a week. Other kits include free admission to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site, Passavant House in Zelienople, the McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center, Vicary Mansion in Beaver County and the Lincoln Highway Experience Museum in Latrobe. Mt. Lebanon High School seniors Philip Papurt and Julien Mikush took first and second place honors at PicoCTF, a cybersecurity hacking contest for middle and high school students.
More than 15,000 students participated in this year’s PicoCTF competition. The competition included increasingly difficult challenges in general skills, cryptography, web exploitation, forensics, reversing and binary exploitation.
Papurt and Mikush competed in teams made up of students from all over the country. Papurt’s team, Lightgoldenyellowpwn, was awarded first place after solving all 88 challenges in 33 hours. The top 10 teams received $12,000 in cash prizes.
According to Carnegie Mellon University’s CyLab Communications Manager Daniel Tkacik, cybersecurity professionals are in relatively short supply today. But PicoCTF has been very effective in sparking interest thus far. Nearly seven out of 10 participants say they are more interested in pursuing cybersecurity as a career after participating in PicoCTF.
GET OUT THE VOTE Help your neighbors exercise their right to vote, while earning a little extra cash. Each year, the Allegheny County Elections Division lines up workers to serve at its 1,323 polling places. Poll workers earn between $150-$175 for working about 15 hours on Election Day and an additional $20 for training.
