In 1905, immigrant and developer Abbot Kinney choose to recreate the canals of Venice, Italy, in Los Angeles, in an area of the city that is now called Venice. As the automobile became popular, the canals fell out of fashion and fell into disrepair. Many of the canals have been lost to development, and what remains today is thanks to a complete renovation in 1992 with the canals reopening in 1993.
Some of the original homes still exist and some have been replaced with modern architecture, giving the area an updated and eclectic feel with lot of depth and texture.
The canals are fed via the Marina Del Ray breakwater, and the water is refreshed every three days. This is a great area to stroll, chat, relax and refresh.
