Since the ULTRAparty began seven years ago, the nighttime Washington Road street party has raised more than $100,000, most of which has gone to groups that help people with disabilities. And while the organizations that benefited are great, the money didn’t always stay locally and you couldn’t really see the effects of the hard work of dozens of volunteers. This year’s ULTRAparty will be different.

The party, organized by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership, will be Saturday, August 3 from 8 to midnight. And as people are dancing the night away to the music of Jimbo and the Soupbones, a portion of their $5 wristband price will go to the Accessible Lebo Fund, a newly established effort that will make improvements in Mt. Lebanon facilities for people of all ages with disabilities.

This year’s funds are earmarked for play equipment for Martha’s Playground in Mt. Lebanon Park. While final details are dependent on how much money actually is raised, plans call for about $12,000 worth of amenities and labor, including two play cars and a cushioned rubberized fall surface, to the left of the stairs, where the sandbox is now.

“For a long time, the Partnership has been wanting to keep the money here,” says Mt. Lebanon Commercial District’s Manager Eric Milliron, who is the staff liaison to the Partnership.

“The ULTRAparty has always been connected to special needs initiatives,” says Partnership member Dorene Ciletti. When they heard that the Recreation Department was looking into having more equipment in the parks that could be used by all people, including those with disabilities, that appealed to the group. “There are so many things we could do in our community that we thought it made sense to keep the money here.”

Future projects could include such things as sponsoring yoga classes at the Rec Center designed for those with disabilities, or special accommodations for senior citizens.

“If we’re a top tier community in the United States, how could we not be doing this?” Ciletti says.
