Jan Wagner moved from the North Hills to her Seneca Drive home about a year and a half ago, she wanted to find a way to become more involved in the community. Wagner came here following the death of her husband, in order to be near her son and daughter-in-law and their two children. She happened to pick up a copy of mtl magazine that had a story about various volunteer opportunities, and the one about donating some time as a driver for Mt. Lebanon Village piqued her interest.
It turned out to be a good match for Wagner.
[1]“Sometime Thursday or Friday, Holly [Patterson, MLV’s transportation coordinator] will send out an email with all of the next week’s trip requests, and we can pick and choose which ones we want to take,” Wagner says. “I like the flexibility of being about to tailor the trips around my schedule. If it’s close by, I can go home and come back, but if it’s further, I’ll just bring along my Kindle.”
Wagner has made some friends since she began volunteering last year, and has already garnered some regular passengers, a woman who has an every-Friday hair appointment and two others who go shopping every other Wednesday.
“They are all just the sweetest, the kindest most wonderful ladies, it’s a pleasure to spend time with them.”
Along with the social aspect, Wagner likes the idea that there is an organization like Mt. Lebanon Village around for her, if the need should ever arise.
“You meet these people and you think, this could be your future. It’s nice to know there are people who will be around.”
