911 heroes run
Though more than a decade has passed , many of us continue to look for ways to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice as a result of 9/11. One way that many people will show their gratitude and respect this year is through the 911 Heroes Run at South Park on Saturday, September 8– A ” 5K for the 9K” who have given their lives since 9/11.
Bridget Van Buskirk of Hazel Drive is the Pittsburgh Race Director for the 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, which is sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation, www.travismanion.com. The event, which takes place in many cities across the country “benefits veterans and families of fallen heroes,” according to its website. Half of the money raised from the race goes to the foundation; the other half is distributed to local 501(c)(3)s “who also strive to honor the fallen or continue to serve our country every day for freedom or safety,” including organizations that benefit firefighters, police officers, members of the military and first responders.
Registration for the event begins at 8 p.m. on Corrigan Drive in South Park (just beyond the black and gold park). Cost is $25 for an individual for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run, with a local goal of $5,000. The National Anthem is at 9 and the gun goes off at 9:30.
