t’s impossible to walk or drive anywhere in Mt. Lebanon and not see evidence of the work that the public works department does. They repair the roads, plow the roads, fix the sidewalks, maintain the traffic lights and the Uptown light poles, plant trees on the tree lawns and in the parks, do every bit of maintenance and upkeep in the parks and in other municipal facilities. They coordinate trash pickup with our waste hauler and coordinate traffic and engineering projects with our municipal traffic consultants and engineers. The public works department has 24 full-time employees with a range of specialties, including electricians, plumbers, carpenters and mechanics.

Seven new employees: The department hired three laborers, two mechanics, a carpenter and an electrician, representing an almost 30 percent turnover.

NOTEWORTHY The mild winter resulted in about a 66 percent decrease in road salt usage. Typically, the department goes through about 7,500 tons in a winter season, but this year, only 12 responses, including an unprecedented zero callouts in February, meant public works only needed about 2,500 tons of salt to keep the streets clear.

The public works department finished work on a turning lane at Bower Hill and Segar roads, at the entrance to St. Clair Hospital, and  is working on installing right and left turning lanes at Bower Hill and Washington roads, which is expected to greatly improve the traffic flow at that intersection. Other major projects include extensive streambank restoration at Iroquois Park and on Thornwood Drive, and new LED lighting at Dixon Field.

NEED TO KNOW The best way to report a missed trash pickup or a broken streetlight, register for woody waste pickup or a block party permit, or make any other municipal service request is to do it on myLebo, [3] the virtual gateway to the community. While public works staff can initiate service requests made over the phone, if you call after work hours, the call won’t be acted on until the next business day. Report a missed trash collection on myLebo [3] and the system immediately sends a notification to the waste hauler’s route manager.

The best way to report a sewer backup is by calling the department at 412-343-3403, or call 911 outside of work hours.
