1992 soccer champs to reunite

The legendary 1992 Lebo girls’ soccer team—the first Mt. Lebanon girls’ team ever to win the state soccer championship—will reunite the weekend of September 14-15, and they’re inviting all Lebo soccer alums to join them.  The team defeated Villa Joseph Marie from the Philadelphia area 2-0 in the 1992 PIAA finals held at Shippensburg University ,with Molly Bushman and Heather Border scoring the winning goals, recalls Libby Kane Mascaro, an organizer of the weekend.  At least 14 of the 18  1992 players will be in town for the 20th anniversary of the season that  inspired many young women who followed to play soccer.

In addition to Mascaro, now a married mother of two who lives in Upper St. Clair,  the team members  were: Stephanie Jardine, Sara Yount, Kathy Poskie, Melissa Klein, Debbie Gruneberg, Helen Murray, Rebecca Stoner, Heather Border, Lisa Warno, Lindsay  Havlin, Kelly Cross, Molly Bushman, Lynn Langston, Brandi Duffy, Tara Lowe, Jill Siegfried, Lauren Clister and Chrissy Marshall.

Most of the girls on that championship team had played together on Mt. Lebanon Soccer Association’s Lebo Cup and travel teams, on Beadling teams and throughout high school. Many, like Mascaro, who went on to play for Penn State, became standout collegiate players.  Some pursued coaching and other sports-related careers—Border now is assistant athletic director at Sewickley Academy, and Bushman owns her own Jazzercise franchise in Philadelphia, Mascaro says.

The weekend begins with an informal get-together Friday evening at The Saloon on Washington Road beginning at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the group will attend the MLHS girls’ soccer game against Erie McDowell at Mt. Lebanon Stadium beginning at 2:30.  All former girls’ soccer players will be honored at the game, with special recognition at half-time for the 1992 team.

Following the game, there will be a party beginning around 4 p.m. at Bados on Beverly Road.  All Mt. Lebanon girls’ soccer alums and their families are welcome to attend any of the events. Mascaro says. For information, e-mail her at libby.mascaro@gmail.com.
